My kitten is scared and won't eat after vacation. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 12 days old | 8.3 lbs

I brought my 10 month old kitten on vacation 4 days ago. Ever since, hes been afraid and he doesnt eat very much. I feel like hes losing weight, hes beginning to look smaller. Nothing i do gets him to eat. He wont even eat tuna or his wet food. He’ll only eat a bit of kibble. Hes mostly not afraid anymore but he still won’t eat like he used to, i think its because i didnt bring his food bowls. When we return home in 4 days, will he eat normally again? How do i get him to eat now?

Poor Toby. He is likely just really scared. You may try to put him in a quiet room by himself with just his food and litter box to see if this helps to calm him and see if he will eat. You can also try to cook him some plain boneless skinless chicken breast to see if he will eat that. If this is all due to the change of environment and stress, his appetite should pick up once you take him back home. If not, I would definitely take him to your vet when you return. If at any point in your vacation, he shows other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or stops eating completely then I would have a vet near you take a look at him. That vet will be able to see what else might be going on and even start him on an appetite stimulant if needed. I hope this helps!
