Why does my cat prefer dog or toilet water over its own bowl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old

My cat tends to drink my dog's water or the toilet water before drinking his own water. Both bowls are floor level and he has no issue eating cat food out of his own bowl. Both water bowla arw stilo water and are refilled at the same time so rhe water isnt "older" or anything. Why do you think that is?

It maybe the dog bowl is bigger or the edge of the bowl is different. I’d try a different water bowl for him to find one he likes better. Cats can be fussy but I’m sure he’ll drink out of a different type of bowl. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Oliver.
