My cat has bloody nasal discharge for months. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 14 lbs

My cat sneezes a lot. Several times a day. Multiple sneezes each time with light brown to bloody discharge shooting out the nose. Going on for a 1.5 yrs. We get allergy shots and he won't sneeze for 3 days and then it's the same as before. Adopted him from pound at 6yrs old 1.5 yrs ago. He's taken pills which haven't helped. Also taken a substance which looks like peanut butter. It's irritating clean up cat snot all the time. Not to mention just plain gross. Is there anything we can do to help

I am so sorry Fluffy is having this issue. The best next step is a specialist for them to perform a rhinoscopy. This is where they use a camera and go up the nostrils to find out what is going on. There is a cost associated with this. If this is something you did not want to pursue at this time you can talk to your veterinarian about performing a culture on the discharge to see if there is a bacteria that need to be treated. Again there is a cost associate with this. The culture can run I have seen as much as $220. These would be the best next step. You can also talk to your veterinarian about searching for a polyp to see if that could be causing the sneezing and infections. If they feel or suspect one then it could be removed under general anesthesia. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
