My cat is sputtering, like a cough and sneeze. Is it a reverse sneeze?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 years old | 7 lbs

my cat is not exactly coughing but more like sputtering. It is like a cough and sneeze combined. She has done it a few times that we have noticed in the last week. She has no runny nose, no hairball (not a hairball cough at all), no difficulties breathing. She just seems to be caught off guard when it happens and it lasts for only a couple seconds then she goes on her way.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult o determine exactly what is going on without seeing the action myself. However, Keeko can be doing what is called a reverse sneeze, which is completely normal. Polyps in the back of the throat can also cause sneezing and coughing and should be ruled out by your vet if you are concerned that Keeko is uncomfortable. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!
