Why does my dog have some black and some white nails? Is it normal?

My dog has all black nails with the exception of 2 which are white. Why is that? He's 8 months old and is a Cesky Terrier

Not to worry, this is perfectly normal! Many dogs have a mixture of black and white nails, and it's due to pigmentation in their nails. Now sometimes they can be a medical reason for the different colored nails, such as a fungal infection, so it's always good to have Archie checked out by a vet just to be sure. I hope this helps!

That appears to be normal pigmentation development. If there is any sign of infection around the nail bed (redness, swelling, discharge) or Kendra is licking/chewing the area, you may want to have it examined and treated. But the color development appears normal. Hope this helps.

One of my little dogs nails have turnt black is there something wrong

Hi! My dog is a Shar pei beagle mix. His nails were originally all black but recently I notice two nails are transparent now. Should I be concerned?
Trauma to the nail, infection or even certain endocrine disorders can cause the nail color to change, but you would see other symptoms such as excessive licking of the paw, sensitivity, lameness, discharge, bleeding, swelling, weight gain or an increase in thirst or urination. As long as Montgomery is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern regarding the change in nail color.

Congratulations on your new puppy! This white coloration is not anything I would be concerned about if the nails are otherwise normal. We do worry if the nails begin to turn brown/rust colored or if the nails become brittle/painful, these could be signs of different disease processes, but the white areas are a normal variation.

My dogs nails look to have some blood on the inside of the nail. Is this normal or is it infected?
This is pretty normal. It looks like the one is a bit bruised but it is OK, not infected. We don't notice it much on other dogs that have black nails; it stands out more in dogs with white nails. Nothing to worry about! Good question!

Black nails tend to be more common with GSD but if they have white or lighter colored hair on the foot often times the nails will be light as well. This is a cosmetic issue only and is a normal variation within the German shepherd breed. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

These white spots can be normal color variation on the nails. The deep pink/red color within the nails is from where the blood and nerve supply run down the nail. This is also known as the quick of the nails and should be avoided when trimming their nails. From the photo, your puppy's nails appear normal. If you see a dark brown color on the surface of the nails near the nail beds, this can indicate a yeast infection but this is not seen in the photo provided. Have fun with your new puppy.

Poor Ruger - I'm so sorry for his past difficulties as well as for what he's going through now - he's so lucky to have found you. The first thing I would want to rule out is ringworm in this location. I know it sounds strange, however it can get into the nailbed and cause the kind of brittle, discolored nails you're seeing. Ringworm is actually a fungus and not a worm as some people think. Your vet can run a fungal culture using shavings from the nails to check for this. If the culture comes back negative, I would probably next consider whether this could be a case of lupoid onychodystrophy. German Shepherds are predisposed to this disease, and since Ruger is a mix it's worth considering. Treatment can be challenging, but it's worth trying several things including omega-3 fatty acids, antibiotics such as doxycycline, and pentoxyfillne to increase blood flow to the region. Some dogs will also respond to steroid therapy. Best of luck getting this figured out.
