Why is my dog scratching red, crusty spots with hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 13 lbs

My dog has two spots that are red with hair loss and sometimes a crusty discharge. One is on his leg and the other on his tail. They haven’t spread but they seem to irritate him as he will naw on them. Is this normal or does he have a skin condition?

Those areas are not normal. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. I would recommend doing a skin scrape to look for mites. He may also need some antibiotics. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
