Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry about Lusi! Lusi's uterus was very distended! And full of puss. Just because the uterus wasn't ruptured it doesn't mean that she wasn't very sick and unstable. She could have been septic (no white blood cells because they were all in the uterus), in DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy from the infection or inflammation) and the bacteria produces a toxin that can damage the kidneys. Having has Lusi hospitalized on IV fluids, IV antibiotics and under observation may have helped but we will never know if that would have been enough to have prevented her death. Pyometras are life threatening and I am sure you and your Vet did everything they could for her. I am very sorry for your loss! :(
