What are these hard, yellowish crusty scabs on my cat's skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My black cat, we don't know what breed she is exactly, has had a yellowish hard, crusty thing sticking out of the skin of her armpit for about 3-6 months now. She seems to have a second one around her leg too. We have no idea what it is but she it doesn't seem to really bother her. She's an older cat, about 8 years old, and I would I would feel a lot better if I knew what it was. She's also an indoor cat and we have 3 other cats who don't have these scabs. They all get along pretty well though.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The scab can be a mass, matted fur, infection, or chronic wound. It is difficult to say exactly what it may be without a photo. If Twilight allows, you can use an electric clipper to remove the fur around the area to keep it clean and get a better look. If you think that the area is increasing in size, starts bleeding, or is causing discomfort, I recommend having Twilight seen by a vet. I hope this helps and that all is well!
