Can essential oil diffusers help my cat's asthma, or are they unsafe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I've heard that using Essential Oils from an Ultrasonic Diffuser can help some people with asthma. Could that help cats too? I have a 5 yr old Birman and she was diagnosed with asthma 2 years ago. She has minor asthma and coughs around 0-3 times a day. As far as I know, strong scents don't bother her, but I want to know how safe this truly is for her, even if the scent isn't that strong? Thanks! :-)

Hello, I would advise against the use of an essential oil diffuser for asthma in cats. We have no evidence that essential oils are effective in the treatment of asthma. Furthermore, some essential oils could even trigger an asthma attack. I would advise you to follow up with your primary care veterinarian to discuss inhaled steroids.
