What's causing my male mouse's sudden scabby rash and hair loss?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 24 days old | 0.0425 lbs

My male mouse has a rash? It showed up suddenly when I hadn’t held him for a few days, he doesn’t seem affected by it but it looks like mange. It’s scabby, his diet hasn’t change, he drinks and eats actively still.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see that Hades has some hair loss, redness, and scratches on his neck and shoulders. This can be caused by fur mites, a skin infection, or a condition known as ulcerative dermatitis. A vet will be able to take a small sample of fur or skin to determine the cause. In the meantime, I recommend trimming Hade's hind nails to prevent him from scratching and causing trauma and applying SSD (silver sulfadiazene) ointment once daily. I hope this helps!
