My dog has diarrhea, vomiting, not drinking. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 65 lbs

Willow my dog has been pooping for the last four days in the house. They have not been solid. Then in the last day the poops have solidified. But when we got home today there was vomit on the floor. Should we be concurned? She will not drink her water unless we put chicken broth in there. She is clearly very hungry so we've been feeding her white rice with chicken. She is not lathargic.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vomiting and diarrhea or soft stools can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Madi evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start her on medications to make her feel better and check her hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good day!

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed.
