Why is my old guinea pig dragging her back legs and what can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 2 months old

Hi. My guinea pig has started dragging her 2 back legs. She seems fine otherwise...great appetite. She is a little over 7 years old. What can I do to try and help her? I have a vet appointment for her tomorrow, but am looking for any advice available so I can do the best for her in her old age. Thank you.

I'm sorry that Squirdy isn't feeling well! Paralysis is definitely cause for concern, and can be caused by serious illnesses such as back issues and certain cancers. However, you vet can perform the appropriate diagnostics to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate course of action. While you wait for you vet appointment, I recommend providing food for Squirdy on the cage floor so that she can easily reach it. You can put water on her pellets as well to make sure that she is getting water. I hope this helps and that all is well with Squirdy!
