My puppy screams when I touch his back leg. What's causing the pain?

Your puppy may have an injury in his back, hips or knees, or something going on in his abdomen that is causing his pain. Because he is so young and there could be many different causes of his discomfort. I would recommend taking him into the vet to be examined as soon as possible. I would also watch him closely to make sure his stool is normal and that he is still wanting to eat and not vomiting. I hope this helps. Thanks reason package. Best of luck.

Poor Scobie! It is difficult to say exactly what can be wrong with her leg from the photo. Pain can be caused by fractures, nerve damage, or joint issues. I can see from the photo that Scobie’s belly is very big and she is pretty thin. She should be seen by a vet right away to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment.

Poor Pipi!! I wonder if he may have injured his ribs or even injured his spine around his chest area. Poodles can have fine ribs, so if he fell he may have fractured one. Jumping on or off furniture or stairs can also strain the muscles that run along the spine (epaxial muscles) causing a very sore back. It is also important to check there are no injuries to his skin - an insect bite or sting may cause sudden pain. Given the severity of his crying, I would suggest you take him to the nearest emergency vet for an exam, so that they can identify the location and cause of his pain. Please do not give Pipi any human pain medicines, as many can be toxic to dogs even in small amounts. I hope he recovers very soon.

Hello, sorry to hear about Naughty. There are multiple potential causes for this pain which could be associated with hip pain or knee pain. Naughty would likely need to have x-rays to rule our hip dysplasia and a torn cruciate ligament. In the interim, you should keep Naughty quiet and rested to prevent further injury. Poor Baby! It definitely sounds like she's painful somewhere. In my experience, the most common cause of yelping or yipping when touched or petted is back pain, often due to a herniated disc - this is a fairly common problem in dogs. She could also be painful due to some other injury to her legs or back. I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a thorough exam to help localize the source of the pain, and may also do x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.

It is common for small breed dogs to experience back pain which can lead to lameness in the hind end. Joint pain can cause similar signs. Poor pup. Unfotunately we can't diagnose a musculoskeletal issue without doing some kind of exam or test (radiographs) on your puppy. The first step is to get him properly examined. After the exam, if the vet feels that it is severe enough, an x-ray will be recommended to look at the bones and joints for any signs of disease. Best case scenario is that your pup just has a mild leg sprain, which usually doesn't cause the pet to be in much pain, but just sore in the area of the injury. They can still walk on the leg, but maybe with a slight limp. If this is the case, then have Sakru take it easy for the next week or two to see if this can resolve on its own. If things don't resolve however, or seem to worsen at any point, its best to then have Sakru examined by your vet for further diagnostics and treatment. I hope that your puppy Sakru feels beter soon! I recommend that you have Teddy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Teddy feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference.
