My hamster's eye is shut with pus and her bottom is wet. What's wrong?

It looks like Pusheen has crusting around both of the eyes, with potential discharge. Discharge from the eyes that is this excessive is not normal, and I would recommend that you take Pusheen to a veterinarian, especially with the other signs that you are noticing. A veterinarian can evaluate Pusheen and ensure that there isn't something serious going on with the limping that you are seeing (such as a broken bone), and may determine that he needs some pain medications. They can also evaluate the eyes, and may prescribe a medication for them to make him feel better (such as an antibiotic drop or ointment). At home, to keep the eyes open, you can use a warm, moist cloth to wipe the eyelids and remove the discharge. If there is an infection, however, cleaning may not clear it by itself. He should be examined by your veterinarian. If he has "wet tail" (proliferative ileitis), he will need treatment and supportive care. Keep his cage clean. Change bedding daily if necessary. It is difficult to say exactly what is causing Gordon's eye to be protruding without seeing him in person or a photo. This can be caused either by the eyeball itself being enlarged or something pushing the eyeball outwards from behind. The first case can be due to a very deep ulcer or a condition known as glaucoma, where excess fluid builds up in the eyeball. Something can be pushing the eye outwards, such as a mass or abscess (walled off infection). Gordon does need veterinary care to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. I recommend calling vet clinics in your area to see if they see hamsters. Some Petco stores may have a clinic associated with them. The red/brown staining you saw is likely porphyrin, which is a normal secretion from the tear glands, that is usually groomed off. Hi, This could either be coming from her digestive system (i.e. diarrhea ) or from reproductive system (uterus and vagina). This needs to be diagnosed correctly. One option is that she has a pyometra (infection of the uterus). In this case she would need surgery same as done with larger animals. In any case, you need to take her to the vet ASAP. Regards

The eye does look a bit irritated. You can clean the spot with a washcloth to help keep the eye open and clear, and to allow you to inspect it for any wounds or additional irritation. If it doesn't clear up on its own after a day or so, seems to worsen, or the crusting continues or worsens, it would be best to have it examined by a vet in person to rule out any injuries or infections in the eye that could be causing it.

The fur around the eyes can change color if there is some ocular discharge that has been leaking from the eye or if your hamster has been rubbing at her eye excessively. She may have an eye infection, and upper respiratory infection, or a scratch on the surface of her eye. I would recommend taking her into the vet to be examined so they can determine what is going on and so that the problem does not continue and spread. It may also be helpful if you could take a picture of the hamster, and show us both eyes, so we can see the difference between the two eyes and hopefully have a better understanding of what is going on. Poor Diana! If this behavior continues, you should have her checked out by a vet. I am worried that she may have a tooth issue like malocclusion or be a working on the start of an upper respiratory infection that could lead to pneumonia. Both of these conditions are common in hamsters and could explain her symptoms. Good luck!
