Why is my cat's eye swollen with a cut and she's suddenly lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old

My cats has a cut right underneath her eye which has now swollen up that side of her face. I have tried cleaning in with salt water solution but we have no clue where the scratch came from as she has been indoors the past few days. It was very sudden to appear. Not sure if it's relative but she also has been quite lethargic the past few days for an unknown reason. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated cuz I have no idea what happened her. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Boo! Sadly Boo is the only one who knows what happened! Based on your pictures I am more concerned about the eye, which appears painful to her, than anything else. The scratch could be from her pawing at the eye. Causes for the swollen closed eye are: viral conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer, uveitis, other trauma. Boo should see your Vet today to have the eye evaluated. She at a minimum needs medications for the eye. I hope this helps and I wish Boo a speedy recovery!
