My cat is dehydrated after sitter forgot water. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 lbs

We went away this weekend, and we had someone check on our cats once. We got home around 2 pm on a Monday, and the cats were checked on at 6:30 on Saturday evening. Our pet sitter refilled their water bowl but forget to put it back down for them. The male cat had a scratchy meow and he instantly drank a bunch of water. When I did the "scruff" test at first, his skin would stick up quite a bit but it seems better. Our other cat seems okay... Do they need to be seen by a vet?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors. A young healthy cat will recover well from a short episode of dehydration. An older cat or a cat with any underlying health problems can have problems recovering from dehydration. You didn't mention the age of your cats or if they have any underlying health problems. If they are older or have any health problems, I would have them evaluated to be on the safe side. If they are young and healthy and eating and drinking well, I would expect them to recover easily, but if there are any signs of lethargy or vomiting, I would certainly have them evaluated. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that they will be fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
