Why is my guinea pig losing hair, scratching, and biting her tummy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 2 lbs

My guinea pig has a bald spot on her tummy as you can see in the picture. She's black and white so it was easy to notice the pink bald spot and it just showed up today. I also noticed that one of my pigs (I have two that live together) is in heat. She's still running around like normal and playing with my other pig and eating and drinking. But she seems to be itchy and might be biting herself. Sorry about picture quality I read a lot of things that said to not handle her until I know what it is.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see the area of hair loss around the neck/shoulder region on Winston. This can be caused by fungal infections, skin mites, or certain hormonal abnormalities. Fungal infections such as ringworm can be transmitted to people, so I do recommend washing your hands well with soap and water after handling Winston and/or his bedding. You should have Winston seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on, your vet may take some hair/skin samples to rule out fungal/mite infections and begin the appropriate treatment. You should also separate him from his cagemate to prevent transmission of the infection. I hope this helps!
