My dog ate candy & wrappers, now vomiting. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | 10 years and 8 months old | 60 lbs

My 10yo chocolate lab ate tootsie rolls, starburst and sandwich cookies in their wrappers 2 nights ago. She left most of the cookie wrappers, but ate the rest. She is now vomiting up the cookie wrappers, no food. She is eating and drinking fine. No bloating. Is there anything we should do to help?

That's a lot of sugar for a dog to eat! The good news is that tootsie rolls do not contain much chocolate, and depending on the type of sandwich cookies Molly ate, she may not have eaten enough chocolate to cause a problem with toxicity. Given that she was vomiting, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Good luck, I hope this helps and happy new year!
