My cat has black runny stool but is eating and purring. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | spayed

Hi my female de-sexed cat Billy who is 14-16 years old recently had a black runny stool which I know could be lead to Melena. But no other symptoms have shown as she is still happily eating, purring and being talkative, is there anything you may suggest? What should I do for her?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Melena is essentially digested blood in the stool. This can be caused by bleeding in the stomach or intestines caused by ulcers, inflammation, clotting abnormalities, or a foreign body. I recommend having Billy seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine the cause of the bleeding. Your vet can perform bloodwork or an ultrasound to diagnose the cause.
