My dog has kidney failure and won't eat. What food options are safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old

My dog has been diagnosed with kidney failure. We have been given specific food from vet but he's not going near it. However when I was eating chicken he was up st the plate wanting some. Is there any other type of food I can give him as he is not eating at all.

You can try a different brand as purina, Royal canin, and science diet all have a good kidney formula food. You can try a canned version mixed in also. If he does not eat any of those, I would try mixing the chicken in with it since he does like that. If he is not eating enough that way I would have his levels rechecked to make sure they are not climbing up again changing his appetite. If all else fails, he needs to eat, they make several different supplements such as Epikatin, that are made to mix with normal foods that benefit the kidneys and do what the kidney diets to for those that do not eat them
