My cat has labored breathing. Is tea tree oil safe to use on her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female

My cat had some laboured breathing so i once put some undiluted tea tree oil on her fur around her throat, was also on antibiotics for her breathing, was 18, also had a benign slow growing lump in her throat and a mass size of a golf ball in her stomach. A few weeks or so after i put the tea tree oil on her she had 10 hours laboured breathing, the vet put her to sleep, said the lump instomach was cancer, but no tests done. Could the undiluted tea oil have worsened her? Poisoned?

I am so sorry about Susie. It sounds like you loved her very much and you did what you could to help her. Cancer may have been in her chest as well causing the labored breathing. There is no way to know for sure if the tea tree oil caused any problems. However, we know that undiluted oil can cause liver problems and they can get very sick from it. Please don’t start self blaming - your sweet kitty was very sick before the oil, and I think you made a very humane decision with euthanasia. Be kind to yourself and let yourself grieve without blame. Take care, and thank you for using Pet Coach.
