How to help a rescue guinea pig feel safe, play, and stay healthy?

Don’t worry, this is very normal behavior for guinea pig in a new environment. It will take a few weeks or maybe even a couple of months until George is fully comfortable in his new place. You can try to encourage him to interact with you by making sure you play with him throughout the day, and offer him his favorite treats and toys whenever he is playing with you, and leave his cage door open to allow him to roam and explore when you are in the room with him. Guinea pigs are fun, fairly easy pets to own. Clean water daily, lots of Timothy hay, limited guinea pig pellets, vitamin C supplement are important. Guinea pigs also have sensitive respiratory tracts, so changing their cage several times a week to keep the urine smell (ammonia levels) down is also important. I would recommend buying a cage with plenty of room for Daisy and Stella to move around. If they are new additions to the house I would take them to a vet for a good exam to make sure they are healthy. At local pet stores they sell bedding and food for guinea pigs. I recommend handling them often which helps make them friendly and become a good pet

Guinea pigs tend to live in colonies which in itself makes them feel safer as they will disperse when a predator attacks, confusing the predator and lessening his chance to catch one for food. So giving your guinea pig a guinea pig friend will make it feel safer. Avoiding loud noises and fast movements and providing a lot of hiding places ( like an upside down cardboard box with an opening ) will make it feel safer as well.

Try to very gradually get them used to you by offering them something tasty such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and commercial treats from your hand. Eventually, they will start to associate your presence with treats, and will be more willing to come out to play. While they are eating a treat from your hand, you can try to gently pet them on the top of their head. Talk to your guinea pigs regularly so they get used to your voice, and ideally put their cage in a room where you are often in, so they get used to your presence as well. They can also learn their names if you use them often enough! Don't try to pick up/hold your guinea pigs until they have some comfort with taking a treat from your hand and putting their front paws on your hand. I would recommend allowing Bella more time to get use to her surroundings. Guinea pigs can be very fearful and nervous. It is possible that Bella has not warmed up to the new house and it just staying in a place she is most comfortable.
