My unvaccinated cat is drooling blood. Is it a serious infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

Is there like some sort of an infection that causes excessive salivating mixed with a bit of blood in cats? Or could it be because of the cold weather? My cat isn't vaccinated yet, she has the above symptoms. Her kittens were noticed to have similar symptoms although the mother and the kittens live in separate homes and eat different kinds of food. All clinics are closed today... should I be worried about them? Or is it a self limiting disease?

I would be most suspicious of a calicivirus infection causing these signs. Calicivirus is a vaccine preventable disease that is mostly seen with kittens. This virus will cause ulcers in the mouth, which will cause it to bleed a little. This disease is often self-limiting, but can cause severe ulcers in certain cases, so it will definitely be good for the vet to check them in the next day or two. It's likely not an emergency though, so they should be fine to wait until then. I hope that helps and all is well with the cats.
