Why do my indoor cats have fleas in Florida, and what works?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My cast have fleas. We have tried CatMD topical treatment, Sentry Shampoo, and Sentry flea collars. Nothing seems to be working and the fleas are getting bigger and growing in number. I don't know what to do or use. Any suggestions on products to use? Also, what would cause fleas? Our cats are completely indoors and have never been outside, but we do live in FL. Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it only takes 1 female flea on your pants or jumping in a window to start a flea infestation in Florida. So, even indoor cats need to be on a flea preventative in Florida. Also unfortunately, many of the over the counter flea products do not work very well (as you have seen). There are a number of prescription flea products for cats. They are more expensive than the over the counter products, but they also work MUCH better. I have attached a handout below on flea control and a link to a chart on flea preventative options in cats. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1575 http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2858 There are a number of monthly flea preventatives for cats on the market, so I would discuss with your veterinarian which products they have had the best luck with in your area. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.
