My intact male dog has a groin swelling. Is it hernia or prostate?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

My 9yr.old male, intact, border collie has developed swelling (small orange-size) in his groin/ lower abdomin area ...basically on either side of the sheath ...feels somewhat like a hernia ...don't think it's an abcess ...not familiar with enlarged prostate issues ...it's been present for 2-3 weeks now ...causing him some discomfort now ...no fever ...appetite normal ...pee's/poo's okay ...any info/help you can supply would be so very much appreciated ...Thank you! ...Debra with 'Mouse'

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to say what Mouse's mass can be without seeing a photo. However, a small orange sized mass on a dog Mouse's size is considerably large and warrants a veterinary exam. The lump can be an enlarged lymph node, a mass, or a hernia. I recommend having Mouse seen by a vet as soon as possible - the mass may need to be removed, or a small sample taken to determine the exact cause. I hope this helps and that all is well with Mouse!
