Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 9 lbs
I have a ChiChi who has been suffering with severe coughing or hacking, which has recently gotten worse. I have had her to several vets and has been prescribed a couple of medicines, but has not helped, at all. Even though she is not listed as one of the breeds that are pronged to have brachycephalic syndrome, do you think that it could be possible for her to actually have this condition ?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Brachycephalic syndrome refers to a combination of conditions including smaller than normal nostrils, a longer than normal soft palate, and some other malformations of the back of the throat. It is unlikely that a chihuahua will have this condition. Conditions that can cause chronic coughs in dogs include a collapsing trachea, heart enlargement, or issues with the lungs. These conditions can be identified with an x-ray or CT scan and may require life-long treatment. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!
