Why is my new hamster biting me and destroying everything in his cage?

Hi there, and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Hamsters can be fearful little dudes, and biting is their natural reaction to a threat. You are a giant potential predator to little Sharky, so you'll need to be patient and compassionate while he gets used to you. Make sure that he feels comfortable in his cage by providing lots of places for him to hide and nesting/burrowing material. Give him a couple more days to adjust to his new surroundings without being bothered, then start slow by introducing your hand into the cage where he can see it. Leave it there for a minute, then put a treat in the cage. Repeat this for 10-15 minutes every day. He'll start to associate your presence with a positive event - a tasty treat. After a few days of this, put your hand in the cage with the treat in it. Even if he doesn't come up to your hand, remove your hand after about a minute, and leave the treat behind. Hopefully, he will start approaching your hand. Again, association is everything - increase y

Unfortunately, some hamsters are more fearful and aggressive than others. This is just their personality. I would try to offer him daily treats but avoid touching him for awhile. Over time, slowly just try to pet him but do not antagonize him or pick him up. If he lets you pet him, give him another treat. Hopefully, over time, he will begin to warm up to you but unfortunately, not all do.

Is this a change in behavior? If so then an appointment with your veterinarian soon would be recommended as he could be in pain for even sometime like a brain tumor causing behavior changes. However, if this is a newly acquired hamster then this may be his personality. On average hamsters are usually more aggressive and less docile then other pocket pets. It is completely normal for a hamster to chew and chew and chew! Just be sure you are offering plenty of safe options for him to chew on, which it sounds like you are doing already. You may need to move him to a metal/wire cage that he cannot chew on and remove the plastic housing so he does not ingest any plastic. It is also normal for him to be a little jumpy as he is still getting used to his surroundings. Just continue working with him and encouraging him to come to you. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Hamsters can get aggressive, especially around their young. I recommend handling the young as little as possible to prevent Khaleesi from being aggressive towards you or from taking it out on her pups. While it is less likely at this age, hamsters can even canibalize their young when they are stressed. Hamsters can typically be weaned (start eating dry food, no longer needed milk from the mother) at about 3 weeks. I recommend separating them into different cages or homes to prevent the hamsters from reproducing. You should also separate Khaleesi from the male hamster if you wish to prevent further breeding. Once the pups are gone, Khaleesi should resume her normal behavior towards you. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Daabool and including a photo. Hamsters are desert animals, highly capable of extracting water from their food. Biting is a common fear response in hamsters, and continuing to earn/win trust by offering treats, keeping movements slow and deliberate. Try removing Daabool from his environment with a scoop or cup, to move to a neutral territory (i.e. table top). Then see if interactions are aggressive. Sometimes its just territorial defense. It is possible that Khaleesi has hurt herself in the new enclosure. I would recommend giving her a few days to get settled to the new cage. Sometimes a change can cause stress and will make hamsters more anxious and scared. This will change their behavior. If in a few day Khaleesi does not seem more settled I would recommend taking her to a vet to make sure she does not have an injury. At anytime if she stops eating/drinking I would take her in sooner. I would make sure bubbles has a large enclosures with plenty of toys to play with. Sometimes hamsters can have a lot of built up energy due to limited space. If he is eating,drinking and defecating normally I would not be concerned. However if he continues to have odd behavior or starts acting ill I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam

Thanks for reaching out about Charly. Hamsters can be very scared and cage protective. When initially handling, try to scoop up in a cup to remove from the cage, then place on a table and try to pick up. This can bypass the territoriality of cage protection. Hamsters are also nocturnal, so don't like to woken. Good luck.
