Why is my dog sleepy, trembling, not eating after diarrhea treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 4 lbs

My Maltese was treated today for upset stomach and diarrhea. She was given IV fluids, an antibiotic, and nausea injection. Blood work was normal, and no fever. This was all completed around 3:00pm. As of 6:00pm, she is very sleepy and trembling quite a bit. She is still drinking but is not eating anything. Is this normal behavior?

She may still feel pretty bad from all the gastrointestinal issues. You can try to check her temperature again. A Normal rectal temperature would be around 100-102 F. You may also want to take her for a little walk (5 minutes), as she may be about ready to have another diarrhea blow out and she may be shaking from gas pains. I am not surprised that she isn’t eating, and actually I would probably not even offer her any food until the morning. At that time I would offer something bland such as boiled chicken and rice. If she vomits again, if the diarrhea starts to have blood in it, or if she won’t eat in the morning then those would be reasons I would take her immediately back for further work up. An intestinal foreign object obstruction can not be ruled out by blood work and should be considered if her symptoms persist. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
