My cat has dark eye discharge. Could new fragrant litter be the cause?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

Hi. My cat seems to have some eye discharge as of 2 days ago. In the very corner of 1 eye it is very dark with dark almost black discharge. I don’t know if this helps but the same night this started, she was in a closed room with very intense fragrant litter I have never used. Very strong. Her eye doesn’t seem to be bothering her to much. Don’t get paid for 2 weeks. Please help. Thank you

Hi there. It is very hard to say much without seeing a photo of her and the eye discharge. If she is not squinting the eye then you can use this eye wash two to three times a day. If after 5-7 days there is no or minimal improvement then you need to get her to a vet for an exam. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-ophthalmic-pet-gel If she is squinting the eye now then she needs to see a vet now. The squinting implies there is either an injury to the cornea or an intraocular disease. I do not think this is related to the litter but anything is possible. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
