My cat is limping, not eating, and breathing fast. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 12 lbs

Cat has been limping since yesterday morning. It seems to be the bottom of his foot that's hurting and it's upsetting him to touch it. We can't see anything in his pads. He's not eating or drinking and seems to be breathing a little bit fast. What can we do, as it being Christmas Day we won't be able to see the vet until Wednesday at the earliest.

I'm sorry that Murphy isn't feeling well! The limping can be caused by trauma or a fracture, arthritis, a joint infection, or an issue with ligaments/tendons (soft tissues). Murphy should be seen by a vet as soon as possible as x-rays are likely to be warranted to rule out any fractures and receive appropriate pain medication. Most towns/cities have an emergency veterinary clinic that is open 24 hours a day, so that may be necessary for Murphy. I hope this helps and that all is well!
