My cat isn't peeing or pooping after travel. How long can a cat go?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 6 months and 23 days old | 5 lbs

I had to be away from our house for the holidays and chose to bring our cat with us. He’s been sleeping in our room but doesn’t seem to be peeing or pooping. How long can the cat go without using the bathroom?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Usually about 24 hours is possible. It is very important to make sure that you have a litter box or two available with the type of litter that he likes and is used to. Sometimes this can be observed in times of stress or when adjusting to a new environment. Make sure that you have this available and monitor him for the next few hours and it is very likely that he will go. Good luck!
