My dog vomited foreign objects and has diarrhea. When to call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 17 days old | 15 lbs

My dog has had diarrhoea today for 2 stools and has been sick once which contained foreign bodies he must have scavenged during his walks. He is still responding to commands and alert, with a wet nose. What do i need to do? When does it begin concerning to contact a vet?

Poor Bertie! I am concerned that there is something stuck since he threw up some foreign objects. I would withhold his food for 6 hours and then give him a small amounts of plain chicken (no bones) and rice to see if this settles his tummy. If he continues to eat and doesn’t continue to vomit/have diarrhea then you could watch him closely. If he continues to vomit, have diarrhea, stops eating, or any blood in his vomit/stool, then I would have a vet take a look at him. The vet would be able to do a fecal, blood work and even X-rays if needed. Your vet will be able to see if there is an obstruction or other issue and get him started on the proper treatment plan to help him feel better. I hope this helps!
