My puppy has parvo and is vomiting. Is the ER best for his care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 18 days old | 17 lbs

My puppy tested positive for parvo this morning. He was lethargic last night, and started throwing up 3 AM. I took him to a 24hour ER at 8 am, and he is supposed to stay there over Christmas since his local vet isn’t open until Tuesday. He only vomited, never got to the diarrhea portion of the illness. Is there anything I need to know? Is the ER the best place for him or should I transfer him to the local vet? Any advice or insight on parvo would be appreciated, I’m devistated.

Poor Jasper! Parvo can usually have a good outcome with aggressive therapy. I think the best place for him is at the emergency clinic for the weekend so he can be monitored 24 hours and receive the proper IV fluids and antibiotics. If he is feeling better by Tuesday, then you could potentially transfer him to your local vet. I would discuss this with the emergency vet at this time. Parvo lives really well in the environment so I would bleach all the bedding and areas that he has been. I would also not allow any new puppies in the area for a year to be extra safe. Finally, once he gets better make sure he gets a booster for parvo and then 2 more sets of booster each 3 weeks apart to make sure he is protected. I hope this helps!
