Why does my cat gasp for air when I try to remove his mats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My kitty has mats and every time I try working on them he starts having trouble breathing. Sounds like a divers oxygen. He has mats he won't let any one touch on his tummy. Is this normal?

This is not normal behavior. I would be worried that Mister has an abnormality in his heart or his lungs that could eventually become life threatening. I would recommend to have him examined by his vet. Depending on the physical exam findings, there are a number of things that may be needed as the next steps to diagnose his condition and to provide the appropriate treatment. I hope this helps!
