Is it normal for a 2-month-old puppy to poop 4-5 times in 6 hours?

Hello, If he is eating well and his feces is formed, I would not be worried about how often he defecates. Some puppies poop more often than others, but I agree that 6-7 times a day seems a bit excessive. The most common cause of issues like this in a puppy this age would be intestinal parasites - so I would recommend taking a fecal sample to your vet for analysis if this hasn't been done already. He/she can look at it under the microscope for evidence of worms like roundworms or hookworms, or other microscopic parasites like coccidia or giardia. If a problem is found, they can prescribe appropriate medication to treat it.

It is normal for a puppy to poop multiple times a day, but at three months old, he only needs to be fed three times a day. I would feed him morning, noon, and evening, and he should be fed a puppy formulated dry food only.

Puppies do have more bowel movements than adult dogs. Most adult dogs typically have two to three movements a day but this is very much impacted by their food. Growing puppies need a lot of calories, and I do recommend feeding at least three times a day at this age. It is normal for them to poop 3 or even 4 or 5 times a day! As long as the stool is solid and well formed, this is perfectly normal. Every dog has a slightly different metabolism. If you are feeding the recommended amount on the bag, that is a good place to start. Over the next month you will want to watch his weight. If he seems to be developing fat rolls over this neck and shoulders, you might want to cut back a little. If he is becoming thin and you can see his ribs or hips, then increase the amount. You may have to increase or decrease his food over time as he continues to grow.

Sometimes puppies (and older dogs) will poop several times in a row when they are excited or exercising, and the stubsequent stool can be soft like you’re describing. As long as it’s not diarrhea and there’s no blood or mucus I wouldn’t be concerned. If she does develop diarrhea I’d recommend seeing your veterinarian since she is so young.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Noelle. She is defecating more than is normal. Most dogs will only have two to three bowel movements per day. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. She needs a new puppy exam, fecal testing, deworming and to discuss her diet. If she is healthy, her vaccines can be started as well. Some puppies will have soft stool due to the stress of coming to a new home. It is important to have her evaluated though as parasites are also common in puppies. Some can be spread to humans.
