Why does my dog have weird tummy sores after neutering and shaving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Male | neutered | 11 months and 9 days old | 110 lbs

Just noticed weird sores on my Great Pyrenees’ tummy. He is 11 months old. Was recently neutered and shaved on his stomach. What could this be?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see that Finley has redness and some crusty areas on his abdomen. This can be due to a bacterial or fungal skin infection and certain types of mites. I recommend having him seen by a vet to determine the underlying cause and prescribe the appropriate treatment. In the meantime, you can try clean the area with a mild dog shampoo and get Finley an E-collar or "cone" to prevent him from licking the area. Depending on how recently he was shaved, the lesions can be due to trauma caused by the clippers, but is unlikely. I hope this helps and that Finley gets well soon!
