How to stop my kitten from attacking my older cat after separation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 7 years old | 8.8 lbs

I have an 8 yr old male cat [Lucy]. My brother recently adopted an unspade 8 month old male kitten [Smally]. I also have 2 female]. He always tried playng with them but they dont like it and hiss or hide. I went on holiday for 2 weeks. Lucy and Smally were separate at different boarding. We then brought Smally home 1st and then Lucy, the next day and since back, Smally is attacking Lucy more aggressively, following him EVERYWHERE and growling when seeing him. Possibly territorial. Please help.

Cats can behave like this after any separation (even just as short as a trip to the vet). Generally this behavior will calm down. For now, separate food, water and litter box so that there is not competition. Also try a pheromone diffuser in the house to see if this helps to calm them down. Separate them if things become too aggressive and then reintroduce once they have calmed down. Best of luck with Lucy.
