My dog is suddenly lethargic and his back legs seem sore. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 10 lbs

My 10 lb chihuahua/yorkie mix has been acting lethargic this evening. This morning he was fine (running around, walking up and down stairs, eating/drinking, etc). This evening he has been laying down constantly, cannot keep his eyes open, and acts like his back legs are sore. I bathed him and looked for bite marks or bruising and cannot find anything. What should I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Charlie. I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian tonight, especially if you think there is a chance he could have gotten into anything (rat poison, gum, grapes, raisins, antifreeze, marijuana, or any other medications). Alternatively, if you do not think he could have gotten into anything and is otherwise eating and drinking well then you may continue to watch him at home until the morning and then contact you regular veterinarian for a same day appointment if he continues to have lethargy. Look for any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, collapsing, and have him evaluated immediately if you note any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.
