My cat has chronic loose stool and meows a lot. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My cat always has loose stool all over her bottom. I feel like it has always been an issue for her but now it is getting ALL over her back side. I tried changing her food from meow mix to science diet SENSITIVE stomach but the issue remains. Also she has always been pleasantly vocal but now she meows A LOT for attention, she even meows when she eats. note: she is a chunky cat and super long hair but I get her shaved for sanitary reasons. Is this an issue that could require medical attention?

Diarrhea could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body, endocrine disease, autoimmune conditions, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please have Mini seen by a veterinarian as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Your vet can run some tests that may guide treatment to provide both you and Mini with relief from her current situation. Good luck!

If she is having chronic loose stool then I would seek medical help to find out the cause so you can both have happier lives. You can add a feline probiotic to the diet which can be purchased at a vets office or any pet store. You may need a hypoallergenic diet or prescription diet instead of sensitive stomach in case it is part of a food allergy. You vet can check a stool sample for parasites and a bacterial infection as sometimes antibiotics can be required to correct the problem. Larger, long hair cats do have trouble grooming and reaching certain areas, so you may need wipe and make sure she stays clean back there
