Diabetic dog losing weight with low blood sugar. Should I increase insulin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My dog has diabetes. He has lost 2.8 kg in 3 months and is continuing to lose weight. He has 2 units insulin twice a day but his fasting blood glucose is 30.2. I believe his insulin must be increased. What would you advise. Jane

A normal blood glucose for a dog is close to 100. A fasting blood glucose of 30.2 is very low. I would recommend you consult with your veterinarian about an appropriate insulin dose after a full chemistry panel is completed.

Hi Jane! I'm sorry to hear that Julius has diabetes! This is a rather low fasting blood glucose, so I would not recommend increasing his insulin dose without consulting with your vet first. It may be necessary for Julius to have another glucose curve performed to modify his insulin dose. Weight loss can be caused by other diseases or even certain types of cancers, and may be unrelated to his diabetes.
