Why won't my puppy eat after losing a tooth? Is teething painful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 14 days old | 20 lbs

My puppy (four months) loves eating and gobbles his food down usually in 2 minutes. He eats Purina Puppy Chow (tender and crunchy). I noticed yesterday that one of his puppy teeth fell out. Last night and this morning he did not seem interested in eating at all. Is it common that when teeth fall out that puppies experience discomfort when chewing?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Eli. Of course, they can experience some tenderness of the gums during teething but usually not of the level that would stop them from eating. I would try soaking the kibble in warm water before feeding and see if he will eat the softened kibble. I would watch Eli very closely today and if he is reluctant to eat, get him to your veterinarian as soon as possible. He could have something else going on such as fever, pain, infection, inflammation, intestinal parasites, among other things. Your vet can gather a history, perform an examination and then advise you on diagnostic/treatment plans. Treatment would be based on clinical findings and the results of any tests. Good luck with Eli.
