My young spayed cat eats a lot but won't gain weight. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 10 lbs

I've had cats all my life. I've fed on an "as-hungry" basis and always have food out. My previous kitties gained some weight, but nothing that was life-threatening. Much of the weight came after being fixed. My current kitty has been fixed and is fed the same way, however, she doesn't seem to gain any weight what-so-ever. Shes a little over a year old. Is this just because she is young? Or should I be worried? She eats A LOT.

Her weight may be ideal for her. It is hard to say without seeing a picture of her. I would recommend reposting a pic of Shenzi so that we can determine her body codition score. She likely weighs a perfect amount but your perception is a bit skewed because you are used to seeing a bit of an overweight pet. We look forward to hearing back from you soon. Best wishes and take care.
