My hamster hasn't pooped in 4 days. Is this a medical emergency?

Diarrhea in hamsters like you are describing is called ‘wet tail’. It is usually due to an overgrowth of bacteria in the gut. Oftentimes hamsters need antibiotic therapy to help them overcome this condition. You should also ensure that your hamster has a good, well balanced diet. Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is not unusual for an animal to not have a BM every single day. A change in diet, stress, any mild upset can put a normal routine off. If Baby is otherwise normal, give her another day or so. If she is straining, lethargic, vomiting, or otherwise unwell, please talk to your regular vet at your earliest convenience. Take care.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Not pooping for 4 days can be due to constipation, or could be due to not having any poop to poop out. Has she been eating well? Also, if constipation is the problem, usually there is an underlying cause, including kidney disease, diabetes, or other conditions that cause dehydration. If she isn't eating well, or if she is either not drinking, OR drinking and peeing A LOT, then I would have her seen by a vet for some blood tests to check for underlying disease. If her bloodwork is normal, an x-ray can show the extent of constipation if it is present, and a repeat and more extensive enema might be required. She may need fluids under her skin to provide her with more hydration. If the problem is severe enough, then an enema will be necessary. I hope this information helps!

Hello, and congratulations on your new hamster! Baby hamsters are so small that you may not notice any urine that gets soaked up by the bedding. Poops will be very small at this age too, probably no larger than 1-2 mm in length. You can search through the bedding for these, but if Pebbles is eating and active, then I would not worry too much. Certainly if her energy or appetite decreases, I would then seek veterinary attention as she may not be feeling well. I hope this helps, and that Pebbles continues to do well!

If she has not eaten in 4 days, this could explain why her poop looks irregular. I am not concerned about the stool, I am more concerned about why she has not eaten in 4 days. Hello. Is Fluffy sitting in the litter box trying to poop? I am not sure what fibo syrup has in it ( tried to research this product & can not find the ingredients ), but we use a product called Miralax here. It is also known as polyethylene glycol 3350. We will give 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon with each meal of wet food. Try to increase fluid intake by offering chicken or beef stocks & broths, tuna water, & of course, fresh water. If Fluffy is eating, give her another 24 hours, but if she does not defecate, she may need professional help & you will need to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Thanks for reaching out about Leo. Dry feces can be a result of diet but also dehydration. Hamsters are desert animals and usually drink very little, acquiring water from their food item. Retained feces could also be a problem with intestinal motility, and should be assessed through a veterinary visit. A fecal examination for parasites is also recommended. Good luck.

If he is passing feces regularly and not showing any sign of discomfort, constipation is not present and even if quite hard, consistency could be completely normal. You can eventually try to vary his diet giving more greens and small amount of grass, clover, or carrots a day would be ideal.
