My dog's poop is bloody and slimy after spay. Is it normal to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 22 days old | 3.9 lbs

Mia was spayed this past Saturday and came home Monday. She recently had her first bowel movement since she came home, and it was covered in blood and green/gray slime. She also recieved all of her vaccines around the time of her spay. She's still eating, and drinking rather a lot. But her activity level has waned...though that could be the E collars doing. I was wondering if this is a normal occurence or something to worry about.

Hi there. Poor Mia- a rough few days! Blood in the stool, or colitis, is not a normal occurrence. However, we do know that stress can cause or be a factor in colitis. And she has had a lot of stress on her body this week! I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. I usually put these guys on a very bland diet and probiotics. Occasionally I also start antibiotics if I have a concern about an infectious process. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
