My dog's lip is bleeding and won't stop because he keeps licking it.

It's unfortunately not possible to post pictures here, it's only possible through our private consultation system. A swollen lip can be caused as a result of a trauma (injury) or insect bite. If it is bleeding a lot I would recommend taking her to the vet as it is quiet difficult to treat at home, it's a delicate location to stop the bleeding or prevent the dog from licking it. If it's just bleeding a little bit and slightly swollen, it is likely to get better within a few days, try to keep the area clean as much as you can, avoid feeding wet food and make sure her water is changed several times a day.

Silly Molly! It can be so frustrating trying to get a lip abrasion to settle! You could try putting a little bid of sudocreme or savlon antisceptic cream on the lip, or failing that some vaseline to act as a barrier. She will likely lick it off no matter what. If it is very superficial it should eventually settle down, however if it is getting worse she may need antibiotics and medicated cream from the vet.

This looks very inflamed and given the severe itching/licking I recommend an urgent physical exam and skin check to rule out infection and identify the underlying trigger such as allergy or immune mediated disease. Referral to a dermatology specialist and biopsy may be worthwhile

If this is a skin infection, you can use a solution of betadine and water (mixed together to give a light brown solution) and clean the area to see if this helps. Unfortunately, most topical ointments, Milo is going to lick off. This may require oral medications if this is an infection (such as antibiotics). I would call the veterinarian on Monday and schedule an appointment for Milo to have an examination so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to speed up healing process and avoid possible infection. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (apply it and then rinse it carefully). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching. This is a quite deep and serious wound and would require a stitch up to heal. An immediate check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory/and pain relief medications. Unfortunately persistent licking will cause infection in the long term. Dogs don’t generally get blood blisters like a human does. These lesions are often related to an infection or certain types of skin cancer. Thor should wear and elizabethan collar at all times to protect the area from licking. I recommend to have call his lesion examined by his veterinarian. It looks like your dog could be suffering from lip fold pyoderma, an infection of the skin on the lower lip. Often oral antibiotics are needed at least initially to treat this condition. For now clean the area with mild soap and then keep it as dry as possible. If your dog is running with his foot an e-collar can help stop this until he gets in to see the vet, to check and see if this is indeed his problem.

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. Its likely that she may have bit his own lip. Other causes include lip fold pyoderma. Both are usually benign and resolve on their own. You may clean the area with skin sensitive baby wipes to keep it clean. Topical antibiotics such as neosporin are often discouraged as dogs may easily lick and ingest this. If the area does not improve within 3-5 days then he should be seen by a veterinarian as she may need additional oral medications. If you think the abrasion is larger and may need stitches then he should be seen today or you may post a picture of the area on here. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. This may be enough to allow for healing. Keep the area clean and dry. If it doesn't heal or if it grows or spreads, have Barnaby physically examined by your veterinarian. He may need antibiotics or further diagnostics, such as a fine needle aspirate or biopsy, if it is a lump or mass.
