Why is my puppy still pooping worms a day after taking Heartgard?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Poppie! Depending on when your groomer saw the worms, it is possible they could have been worms killed by the dewormer and then pooped out. There are also different kinds of worms one may see in the stool, some of which are not killed by the commonly used dewormer or the dewormer in heartgaurd (such as tapeworms). I would recommend dropping a stool sample off for your vet to check under the microcsope, or if your groomer sees another worm having them save it and bring it in for your vet to check. Your vet can then prescribe the appropriate dewormer for Poppie.

Hello, you should expect a die off period of 3-5 days after administration of the medication. Because it is administered orally, most roundworms and hookworms begin to die almost immediately, but it may take up to 3-5 days to have complete clearance of worms. You may recheck a stool sample in 10 days to ensure there are not more parasites noted. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Heartworm preventative medications also kill intestinal worms such as hookworms and roundworms, so it's not uncommon to see a puppy pass some worms in the stool after getting a dose of heartworm prevention. As long as Ginger is acting normal, this shouldn't be cause for concern. She will likely finish passing the worm the next time she has a bowel movement. You can take her outside for a potty break to see if she needs to go, or gently wipe her rear end with a warm washcloth to see if the worm will come out easily.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! That's good that you see adult worms, it means the medication is working! I would have your Vet recheck a stool sample in 3 weeks to be sure no eggs are present. The 2 doses may be enough to kill the adult worms. Also he will be started on heartworm prevention that also is a monthly dewormer when you bring him to your Vet to continue vaccines. Hello and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Parasite eggs are microscopic so I'm wondering if what you're seeing in the stool is actually eggs. It could be adult roundworms or even tapeworm eggs. It is not uncommon to see the adult roundworms as they are killed by the deworming process. If it is tapeworm eggs, you may need to end up treating for fleas (as this is how tapeworms are spread). The Dolpac should help treat for tapeworms and the praziquantel should be effective for giardia and roundworms. It is possible that you may end up needed to retreat but I suspect what you are seeing may be normal for the deworming process. Definitely take a fecal sample back to your veterinarian in about 3 weeks to ensure the infection is cleared. Also the prevent reinfection make sure to clean up your dogs feces from the yard. If at any time Echo seems to be acting ill or has diarrhea I would take her back to your veterinarian.

I would recommend you contact your veterinarian as they know which type of worms they were trying to treat and which medication they used but you will most likely have to have him reevaluated for another deworming treatment. It may be best to perform a fecal exam to check the specific type of parasite. Best of luck!

Great questions! You should stop seeing worms in his feces in the next couple of days. Absolutely you should give him his new dose as scheduled, and I would not give it sooner or later than recommended. Sometimes you can see some GI upset when dogs are dewormed due to movement of the dead worms through their GI tract, and if Bourbon has an upset stomach, you can feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. I'm glad Boop by Petco and Dr. Lauren were able to help you :-)

Congratulations on your new puppy. I have a dog named Hayden too! I suspect what you are seeing are roundworms. They are commonly passed in the stool after deworming, so you are correct that it just means that the medication is working. Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. I do not think you have anything to worry about. The stool could look this way more from the stress of the veterinary visit, than from the Heartgard. It can take approximately 8 hours from the time a substance is swallowed to the time it is passed back out, so I very much doubt that the medication caused this. Now, if Max had vomited within 30 minutes or so of swallowing the Heartgard, then I would say this is the probable cause. So, as long as he is eating & drinking regular, & his stool does not get looser, then he will be perfectly fine.
