My dog's in heat: Is a lump coming from her vagina normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 43 lbs

So this is my dogs second heat , she got pregnant on her first heat (unintended) and we are spaying her in February . But every time she goes into heat she gets this ball coming out of her vagina and she swells . The vet told me swelling is normal and told us at her last visit (2 weeks ago) that she’d be going into heat soon . It’s not painful and no abnormal discharge . I dont have money to take her to the vet again. Is this normal ? They said she was in perfect health and examined down there

There are several possibilities.but I assume It could be a vaginal prolapse, or even a bladder prolapse. If it only happens during her heat cycle then it is likely hormonally responsive. If it becomes difficult for her to urinate or if it prolapses any more dramatically then she really should be seen immediately. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
