My young kitten about 6 weeks old has excessive amounts of yellow discharge from her right eye, I'm going to our local vet later but is there anything I should do for her currently?

No, if you are taking her into the vet soon I would suggest you not put anything in the eye. They will want to see the discharge so I would not wipe it out. Eyes are very delicate organs and you could do more damage than good by putting an incorrect medication in the eye. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thick yellow eye discharge usually means an infection. She should be seen as soon as possible by your vet for an exam. She will likely need eye medication and possibly an oral antibiotic. These infections can progress quickly, so the sooner the better.

Hi. Poor Missy. Unfortunately there isn't a home remedy in this case that we can recommend without seeing a veterinarian. It appears missy has an infection. In kittens these can be very common, and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, ulcers, allergies, and many more. She would need to be seen to better narrow down the most likely cause and get on the right prescription medications.
