My dog's ear smells bad and she's scratching. Is it an ear infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years old

My dog has been scratching one ear a lot and then she licks her paw. The ear does have a stronger odor than the other ear. Is it possibly an ear infection? What should I do?

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually caused by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take Emma to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an ear infection. I recommend that you have Emma evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!

These can be symptoms of ear infection. Puku will need to be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any infection. A swab of the ears can be examined in the clinic to confirm infection. It can be bacterial, fungal or a combination. Treatment is typically an appropriate medication and ear cleanings daily for 2 weeks.
