My puppy has diarrhea with blood but is still active. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 26 days old | 3.2 lbs

My dog suddenly experiences diarrhea, his stool is brown and slightly wet and has decreased since the first stool. He pooped 5 times and the last one had blood. He is still cheerful and active, he doesn't vomit and doesn't have a fever. He also eats his food. I wonder what this is?

Because Cooper is a puppy the diarrhea may be due to intestinal parasites, infection , bacterial overgrowth, or eating something that upset his stomach. You can try offering Cooper a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if this settles his stomach. However, if the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours or is accompanied by decreased appetite, vomiting, or lethargy then he should be examined by a veterinarian. If the diarrhea persists he may need prescription medication and fluids to prevent dehydration. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Cooper is feeling better soon!

These signs are compatible with a colitis, an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, which is usually dietary related. I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. If he does not eat solid food yet a check up would be ideal. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed.
